Breathing well in the winter...

Here are some natural tips to help you breathe well this winter, vital for your good health.

Follow these tips and you will breathe easier, help prevent asthma attacks and resistant catching the common colds or flus that tend to circulate this time of year.

Please Nasal Breathe Only! Your nose is your instrument for breathing not your mouth. Mouth breathing is the best way to swallow up germs

Breathe from your diaphragm. Most people breathe from their upper chest only, which actually limits the amount of oxygen they receive

Relax - calm breathing works best

Exercise - gentle walks will help you feel better

Avoid foods that increase breathing such as chocolate, caffeine, too much protein, alcohol or dairy Also, avoid large meals. All food increases breathing

Sleep in a cool room; turn off the central heating

If you do catch a cold, raise the head of the bed slightly if possible; put a book or bricks under the legs
Drink 1/4 tsp of unprocessed sea salt in a glass of warm water to thin mucus (contact me for Wellness Works own natural 'White Gold', sourced from the pristine waters at the top of South Island, New Zealand)

Use small 'Mini-Breathe holds or pauses' to open up your airways if you're feeling breathless or congested. Breathe normally for 10 seconds, hold 5 seconds, repeat

Please let me know how you get on with these tips - and keep well this winter

Snoring

Nothing is quite as soul-destroying as trying to sleep and then hearing the tortuous sounds of your loved one laying next to you, snoring. Your vows might have been for better or for worse, but no one told you anything about endless nights of being woken up, the dark rings under your eyes that would follow, and the need for you to drink endless cups of coffee a day just to stay awake.
And as bad as snoring may be for the person who has to listen to it, it can also seriously impact on the health of the person doing it.
So is there a way to get your partner to stop snoring? Or will you just have to resort to separate bedrooms in order to get the much-needed sleep that you have been deprived of?

Don’t give up hope. Snoring is indeed a problem, but it’s one that can be eliminated...if you know where to look for the solution.
Some temporary relief...
Since snoring is most common when lying on the back, sometimes getting your partner to stop can be as easy as asking them to roll over and sleep on their side. Using a humidifier to the room can help by moisturizing your partners airways and thus help reduce snoring symptoms. A dry throat can contribute to soft palate vibration. Some people find sprays and nose strips provide temporary relief to prevent snoring, though these methods are not as effective as getting to the root cause of the problem, as Buteyko therapy does. Its also worth investing in a good quality pillow to properly support the shoulder, neck and head areas.  Since lack of support of these areas can restrict airflow, a quality pillow can help.
A permanent solution...The not-so-wonderful sounds of snoring are produced by the soft palate’s vibrations. The soft palate is a flap of muscular tissue that closes off the nasopharynx during swallowing or speaking. The soft palate can vibrate irregularly when there are conditions that are interfering with one’s ability to breathe through the nose. Allergies, colds, and blocked airways are common triggers for over-breathing at night. This hyperventilation can be eliminated with simple Buteyko breathing exercises and lifestyle guidelines. Please see our page on snoring and sleep apnoea for details...sleep well!
