Hydration and Asthma

How much water do you drink? Have you been diagnosed with Asthma? Today I'm going to highlight a very important work, by Dr. F. Batmanghelidj. His book 'Your Body’s Many Cries for Water', explains a very important point that has often been overlooked when treating Asthma: dehydration. Inadequate water consumption has an impact in the development of Asthma and this should ideally really be addressed before prescribing any medication.

The human body is composed of 75% water and it has systems that regulate its distribution. Those systems of “drought management”, have established certain priorities according to the importance of the organs (for instance, the brain is treated with the highest priority). Histamine is in charge of the water regulation system so when we don’t drink enough water, it becomes overly active. If the dehydration becomes chronic, too much histamine is released and can cause allergies, asthma, and chronic pain in different parts of the body. But these conditions should not be treated with medication (i.e. antihistamines) because they are signals telling us that there is a shortage of water in your body.

If a state of chronic dehydration in the body leads to Asthma, the person will experience increased respiratory distress, coughing and excess mucous secretion. All that bronchial constriction is caused by increased levels of histamine in the lung tissue. The lungs need water to keep the air passages moist and to prevent them from drying up when air circulates in and out. Therefore, the release of histamine in the lungs is really a response from the body to preserve its levels of water in an organ that is a major site of water loss.

The minimum daily water intake should be 6 to 8, 8oz glasses per day (alcohol, coffee, tea and caffeine-containing beverages do not count as water) and the best times to drink them are half an hour before taking food and two and a half hours after each meal.

On average, a patient suffering from Asthma should see positive results after three to four weeks of regulating their body water levels. Importantly, the increase of water intake should be done gradually and sustained on a daily basis. Overdrinking or “binging” in water for a few days is not going to undo the damage of months or years of chronic dehydration.

Watching the levels of potassium intake is also recommended for Asthmatics because high amounts of it can promote the increase of histamine production. A good example of this is orange juice, which has a very high amount of potassium, therefore, a maximum of two glasses a day should be consumed.

In regards to the quality of drinking water, it is ideal if the patient uses filtered water. Chlorinated water, besides causing skin irritation and destroying the friendly microflora of the digestive track, forms free radicals and promotes oxidation (it can for instance deplete our vitamin E reserves). Even worse, chlorinated water contains chemical compounds called trihalomethanes, which are carcinogens that result from the mix of chlorine with organic matter. These chemicals can cause mutations by altering DNA and can also suppress the function of the immune system. In addition, chlorine has been proven to aggravate asthma in children, especially in those who get exposed to it by frequent use of swimming pools[ii].

Maintaining good hydration is extremely beneficial for your general health. Medication for chronic, long-term conditions can work against you and make you ignore your own body’s signals for help. Like Dr. Batmanghelidj points it out in the cover of his book: 'You’re not sick; you’re thirsty. Don’t treat thirst with medication'.

Breathing well in the winter...

Here are some natural tips to help you breathe well this winter, vital for your good health.

Follow these tips and you will breathe easier, help prevent asthma attacks and resistant catching the common colds or flus that tend to circulate this time of year. 

Please Nasal Breathe Only! Your nose is your instrument for breathing not your mouth. Mouth breathing is the best way to swallow up germs

Relax - calm breathing works best

Exercise - gentle walks will help you feel better

Avoid foods that increase breathing such as chocolate, caffeine, too much protein, alcohol or dairy Also, avoid large meals. All food increases breathing

Sleep in a cool room; turn off the central heating

If you do catch a cold, raise the head of the bed slightly if possible; put a book or bricks under the legs

Queenstown, South Island New Zealand...events and courses

Well, here we are in Queenstown...end of our first day and all going well. What a beautiful place to work. Lots of Events planned: 1) 6pm tomorrow Tues 31st Jan, free nutritional Event in Frankton, 2) repeated 7:45pm at Yoga Nadi Wellness Centre. Then 3) a nutritional Event at 12pm Wednesday, 1st Feb in Frankton, and 4) a Buteyko Breathing Workshop 1pm, on 2nd Feb at Yoga Nadi...Still more to come over the next two weeks, will keep you posted. Christmas can be a very stressful time. The expense of buying gifts, the pressure of last minute shopping and the high expectations that often come with 'family togetherness' can all combine to undermine our best intentions. Here are some practical suggestions can help you reduce 'Christmas stress'.
Make a list of all the gifts you want to buy BEFORE you go shopping. If you wait for inspiration to strike, you could be wandering aimlessly around the shops for hours! Focus the interests of family and friends to help you when choosing gifts (remember money or vouchers are also great gifts as they allow people to choose what they want).
Cross people off the list as you buy to avoid duplication
Buy a few extras, such as chocolates, just in case you forget somebody or you have unexpected guests arrive bearing gifts.

Some tips to reduce the stress of Christmas cooking include:
If you are cooking lunch at home, delegate tasks! You don't need to do everything yourself.
Keep it simple – for instance, you could always arrange for a 'buffet' lunch, where everybody brings a platter, so spreading the cost as well.
Make a list of food and ingredients you need. Buy as many non-perishable food items as you can in advance – supermarkets on Christmas Eve are generally extremely busy.Write a Christmas Day timetable. For example, 11.30am – put items to cook in the oven, 12pm feet up and 20 minutes relaxation time, etc....

And often the biggest cause of stress at this time of the year...
Relationships
Stress, anxiety, and depression are common during the festive season. If nothing else, reassure yourself that these feelings are normal. Successful stress reduction strategies include: Don't expect miracles. If you and certain family members bicker all year long, you can be sure there'll be tension at Christmas gatherings. Avoid known triggers. For example, if politics is a touchy subject in your family, move the conversation on quickly. If someone brings up the topic, use distraction and quickly choose something else to talk about.
Use relaxation techniques such as Buteyko breathing therapy, to cope with anxiety or tension. 
Family members involved in after-lunch activities (such as games in the back yard) are less likely to get into arguments! Plan for something to do as a group after lunch if necessary. People under stress often tend to 'self-medicate' with alcohol, cigarettes and other drugs. Try to remember that drugs can't solve problems or alleviate stress in the long term. Take yourself away from the situation for some well-deserved 'ME' time. Make your health and wellbeing a top priority this Christmas

Walk and Talk Therapy
In 2012 I'm introducing a new option for my clients - a new concept in personal Life Coaching.  There are many ways of working through our issues, working on our relationships and problems - and many ways of having therapy and coaching. This doesn't always have to involve sitting in a therapy room. Sometimes it's easier to talk when we don't have to sit face to face. Walking in a beautiful park or other setting can make it easier and more enjoyable and no less productive. In fact many studies say it makes it even more productive, as walking strengthens the connection between the mind and the body. The emphasis in Walk and Talk Therapy is on the therapy -- the walking is a secondary benefit. It is not a strenuous workout or any kind of personal training. Afterwards Viv will give you a written summary of what was discussed and help you set achievable goals to move forward. Your first initial consultation will be at 'BEING', then you can schedule your following sessions as 'walk and talk', or mix them up -- some at the clinic, some walking. It's your choice
What happens is the weather is bad? It is always your choice to make the 'weather call'.  Having experienced the walk and talk process, many clients are reluctant to return to the clinic room setting for their sessions. We will either reschedule or grab an umbrella and still go.
