Nothing is quite as soul-destroying as trying to sleep and then hearing the tortuous sounds of your loved one laying next to you, snoring. Your vows might have been for better or for worse, but no one told you anything about endless nights of being woken up, the dark rings under your eyes that would follow, and the need for you to drink endless cups of coffee a day just to stay awake.
And as bad as snoring may be for the person who has to listen to it, it can also seriously impact on the health of the person doing it. So is there a way to get your partner to stop snoring? Or will you just have to resort to separate bedrooms in order to get the much-needed sleep that you have been deprived of? Don’t give up hope. Snoring is indeed a problem, but it’s one that can be eliminated...if you know where to look for the solution. Some temporary relief... Since snoring is most common when lying on the back, sometimes getting your partner to stop can be as easy as asking them to roll over and sleep on their side. Using a humidifier to the room can help by moisturizing your partners airways and thus help reduce snoring symptoms. A dry throat can contribute to soft palate vibration. Some people find sprays and nose strips provide temporary relief to prevent snoring, though these methods are not as effective as getting to the root cause of the problem, as Buteyko therapy does. Its also worth investing in a good quality pillow to properly support the shoulder, neck and head areas. Since lack of support of these areas can restrict airflow, a quality pillow can help. A permanent solution...The not-so-wonderful sounds of snoring are produced by the soft palate’s vibrations. The soft palate is a flap of muscular tissue that closes off the nasopharynx during swallowing or speaking. The soft palate can vibrate irregularly when there are conditions that are interfering with one’s ability to breathe through the nose. Allergies, colds, and blocked airways are common triggers for over-breathing at night. This hyperventilation can be eliminated with simple Buteyko breathing exercises and lifestyle guidelines. Please see our page on snoring and sleep apnoea for details...sleep well! Hayfever (Allergic Rhinitis)
Rhinitis is the inflammation of the lining of the nasal passages. Allergic rhinitis is where this inflammation is caused by an allergic reaction to common particles in the environment. The condition is characterised by a recurrent runny, stuffy, itchy nose and sneezing. The eyes, throat and ears may also be itchy. Around 20% of New Zealanders suffer from allergic rhinitis. Whilst it can develop at any time of life, about one third of sufferers first develop symptoms in childhood (usually before the age of ten) People with allergic rhinitis react to particles in their environment, such as pollen, dust, mould or animals. These particles are called allergens. Some people are sensitive to only one or two allergens, while others are sensitive to many. When a person inhales the allergen that they are allergic to, antibodies react to it. An enzyme called histamine is released, causing the inflammation and symptoms characteristic of the condition. Most of us are familiar with the standard treatments for hay fever, sinusitis and rhinitis...antihistamines and inhaled steroids. But do you know that Buteyko therapy offers a simple and effective option to medication, that is highly effective at relieving these symptoms? Professor Buteyko established that over-breathing (hyperventilation) causes the symptoms of hay fever by disrupting the balance of carbon dioxide and oxygen in our airways. When we over-breathe we also inhale excessive quantities of allergens like pollen, cat dander and house dust mite. These factors combine to trigger the inflammation and blocked or runny nose that we associate with our symptoms. Right from the first session of Buteyko breathing exercises, blocked noses clear and breathing becomes easier. Most people are free of their symptoms and need for sinus and hay fever medication within the first week...so if you are suffering, please take me up on my offer of FREE consultation to find out more about how Buteyko can help you - and put miserable symptoms behind you! |
